Question by Katie: making cheap homemade wedding invitations?
so i am kind of a DIY bride, and I am trying to get some ideas where I can put together a low cost (our budget is very small) wedding invitation. i would perfer to make the whole thing myself, except for the print out of the wedding details so i dont have to keep writing it over and over again. any suggestions? thank you.

hi katie, i got blank ivory cards with a deckled (feathery) edge at a local art supply store, then wrote them out in calligraphy for my save the dates. also i bought a pack of ivory skeleton leaves and glued a skeleton leaf to the front of each card. you can get skeleton leaves in ivory, copper, gold, silver, purple, green…
it was a LOT of work for 20 cards b/c i kept making mistakes and so i ended up buying twice as many cards as i sent out… but if you computer-printed the message in a nice font and then put it in the card it might be easier. art supply stores sell adhesives that won’t wrinkle up the paper. also they have beautiful papers, just ask if what you want will work with the type of printer you have. you could even do a 3-way fold if you used the paper instead of ready-made cards. not sure what stores you have access to, but the one i go to has matching envelopes for many of their papers.
if you have more patience than i, it’s a lovely way to go.

p.s. as to the end result & people’s opinions, elegant CAN be done DIY… it’s all about what kind of feeling you want the wedding to have – your invites just enhance the tone. so you can go elegant, homey, cute… whatever you want. and if somebody desperately requires that their invitation come from the printer, let them pay for it!

The cost of invitations is minor next to postage stamps. Dont skimp on the paper & printing! At most you’ll save $ 25 for the sake of looking pathetic to all the people you invite.

At Big Lots they have – in my area anyway – right now for a couple bucks one or two styles of Martha Stewart invitations and some place cards and other invite decorations… I bought a couple boxes to put i gift baskets I make for when I give away a ceremony at a local charity auction.

We used pealised cream card for my sister’s wedding had it proffessionally folded at the shop we got it from this cost around £7
we also bought pearly envelopes to match.
then we stuck diamante on the front and added some ribbon in her colours and printed the invite wording on hammered thin card, cut to sie and glued it inside the invite.
As fun as DIY is, you should give yourself a break.
I went to Michaels and picked up those invitation packs. They cost $ 30, I used a 50% off coupon from the paper, and paid $ 15. They’re easy to use and are user friendly. Totally take advantage of them.

I bought an inexpensive kit for my invitations. The kit was very high quality and nobody knew I did them myself. Additional information I printed on small pieces of plain old computer paper. This saved me quite a bit on postage, which is a much larger cost than the invitations! I was a tiny fraction of an ounce below the mot you can hav for a regular stamp! I was able to use regular stamps instead of the more expensive traditional wedding stamps.

I created my invitation using Microsoft Word and used font Monotype Corsiva, which is very elegant, but still very legible.
I had a family friend get his invitations from Walmart and both my parents and I felt they looked cheap. What I got looked elegant and perfectly appropriate and wasn’t very expensive.
I know a lot of people love the kits, but I wanted to do our invitations all myself as well. Something simple and creative.
So, I got some lovely, blank-inside note cards (on sale, no less), some double-sided tape, and some tracing paper, and some colored paper. I cut the colored paper to the size of the inside of each note card and affixed it to the right side of the card with the double-sided tape. I printed the information on the tracing paper (tedious – you have to feed one sheet at a time, and it jams – but it’s worth it), cut it to size as well, and layered it over the colored paper.
The invitations were easy to make, cost very little, were original, and looked great. Everyone loved them.
