Question by Emz: Cheap wedding reception ideas for a small wedding with mainly family?
We are having a small wedding with mainly family. About 25 people total. What’s the best way to have the reception? We looked at a small restaurant that mainly does functions, but it seems a bit much for just family. Any other ideas of where/how we could do it? For a dinner. Thanks.

Hi Emz,

There is a range of ideas from doing it cheaply like a barbeque outside. maybe having a catered event by a small caterer at a community center, maybe having it at home of a family member with it being catered, or having it a restaurant.

BBQ in a relative’s garden. You can get those catered inexpensively.

    Good luck

    Hi, EMZ,

I thought of BBQ first, too. When having something outside, don’t forget to pre-spray for bugs, though. I’ve seen events ruined when even country clubs left out this important step. You can spray the day before and not have problems.

You have not told us about the ceremony. If you are not bringing the officiate to the reception and having it there, think of the location where you are saying ‘I do’ and find a nearby place for the reception.

A few options. You could rent out a room at a restaurant, instead of a whole restaurant – some have small rooms off the main part of the restaurant. Have a picnic in the park. Have it at someone’s house and decorate. Think of an unusual place – like an art gallery, movie theater, candy store, roller rink – that’s in your town that with a little decorating could be a neat wedding reception.

I do agree with having it at home. Your family can just prepare the foods. It won’t be too hard as there’s only 25 guests. Those who are closer to you can even bring their specialty dish, so that can decrease the costs as well.

this article helped me come up with cheap ideas. I love the idea about the wedding cake (don’t tell the bakery it’s for a wedding and you can special order it like it’s for a party at half the cost)
